This book it's just soon good not even kidding. In the future if I remake my thing on my favorite books I'll put this book in because reading this...I COULLD NOT put it down it was ridiculous. This book was perfect in every single way because of... *drum roll in the background*... the characters!
Let's start off with Clancy Gray, The presidents son, and the only one *cured* of the disease spreading through out the world that either kills everyone below 13 or gives them awesome powers. The thing with Clancy is that this type of antagonist/villain type isn't new to me. We have the mirror image of this character in Percy Jackson with Luke and in The Mortal Instruments with Sebastian. I'll call this antagonist the Sebastian villain. The Sebastian Villains all: a) Have a father with power and significance in the story. b) A connection to a main character .c) Have creepy weird things that do like Sebastian always just like appears the first thing Clancy says in the story in reciting Ruby's name by heart despite the fact that they have never met. And d) They all have blonde hair don't ask me why they just do. And Clancy is just so creepy and shady and Ruby the main character trusts him which was just so stupid I can't begin. Even though Clancy was creepy and straight up scary the author Alexandra Bracken is totally amazing at making other types of characters.
Chubs, Lee, and Zu are the best friend almost family group ever Liam and Chubs always take care of Zu and Zu saved their butts when the PSF's ( other bad guys ) were trying to kill them. And when Ruby meets up with them the dialogue was just super funny with Chubs being grumpy and Liam making sure they don't kill themselves. I loved the scenes with Betty( the car) and the four of them just annoying each other.
Their powers fit them so well. Ruby is the good side of her type of power because she doesn't manipulate people even though she can. Martin and Clancy are the bad sides they manipulate people and don't care if they die or what happens to them. I really liked Zu's powers too because she so small and quiet and she's given these crazy abilities with electricity that she can't really control it and I liked seeing her finally harness her powers. I was just annoyed we didn't see any reds for example:
Greens- good memory.
Blues - telekinesis, Liam and other random characters have this ability.
Yellows- power over electricity , Zu has this.
Orange - they can manipulate people see their memories and other stuff, Clancy, Ruby , and Martin have this.
Reds- No idea the books says nothing. All I know is that they're cool.
Also note that the further down the list there are less people with the abilities. And see that the books says nothing about the reds.
This book had good and strong characters that were given powers and how they dealt with that really made the book amazing. There was an idea of hopelessness that there was only so many kids left after the disease and only so much they could do. I loved this book because it was thought out and made so it was funny, sad, and thrilling at the same time.
P.S. they're making a movie for it and I'm so excited.
